Training Overview
- Classroom instruction paired with hands‑on range exercises
- Students must pass both components to earn certification
- Practical skills include: running the timer, scoring, managing shooters, and responding to simulated unsafe behaviors
- Class size limited to 17 participants
Participant Requirements
- Active ASI Membership Participants must maintain an active, paid ASI membership. The 90‑Day Temporary Membership is not eligible for RO Training. Your membership record must be complete and current, include a clear photo of your face, and have your digital membership card downloaded.
- Match Experience Participation in at least three ASI matches (or instructor approval).
- Rule Book Review & Trainee Experience Review the ASI Rule Book and begin serving as a Range Officer Trainee under guidance from your Primary Club Contact (PCC).
- PCC Recommendation Obtain a verbal recommendation from a PCC listed at: https://asi-usa.org/affiliate-club-locations/ ASI will follow up with them.
- Application & Fee Complete the online RO Training Application using the same email address as your membership: https://app.joinit.com/o/asi/uhKvaGfcW5BvbzxBd Class fee: $20.00
- Post‑Training Expectations Serve as a Range Officer throughout the year and work with your PCC‑assigned RO mentor to continue developing your skills.
- Certification Maintenance Successful completion of the class and continuous maintenance of an active ASI membership.
How to Prepare for Class
- Study the Rules Review the ASI Rule Book, especially Safety (p.2) and Range Commands (p.4).
- Volunteer at Matches Helping with setup, taping, or teardown provides valuable hands‑on exposure to match flow and safety practices.
- Connect with Leadership Building relationships with PCCs strengthens your visibility and helps integrate you into the RO community.
What to Bring
- Lunch, snacks, and fluids
- Weather‑appropriate clothing (avoid loose garments; outdoor range portion included),
- Hat with a bill and tight neck shirt.
- No open toe shoes
- Eye and ear protection
- Approximately 100 rounds of ammunition
- A safe handgun (semi‑auto or revolver, .22 rimfire or larger)
- A spare magazine or speed loader
- A holster or a gun case/range bag for transporting your firearm when not shooting
